Background of the Study

Nurse-led interventions in critical care units play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality rates. Nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) are responsible for monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and providing interventions to critically ill patients. In Benue State, where healthcare resources may be limited, the role of nurses in managing critically ill patients becomes even more critical. This study aims to investigate the effect of nurse-led interventions on the reduction of mortality in critically ill patients in Benue State hospitals, focusing on the impact of early detection, proper monitoring, and timely interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of nurses in patient care, the mortality rate among critically ill patients remains high in many hospitals, particularly in resource-constrained settings like Benue State. Nurse-led interventions, such as early detection of complications, timely administration of medications, and appropriate care planning, are essential in reducing mortality rates. However, there is limited evidence on how effectively these interventions are being implemented in the state's hospitals and their actual impact on patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effect of nurse-led interventions on reducing mortality rates among critically ill patients in Benue State hospitals.

  2. To examine the specific nurse-led interventions that contribute to improved patient survival in critical care settings.

  3. To identify barriers that nurses face in implementing these interventions and propose strategies for overcoming them.

Research Questions

  1. What is the effect of nurse-led interventions on the mortality rates of critically ill patients in Benue State hospitals?

  2. Which specific nurse-led interventions have the greatest impact on reducing mortality in critically ill patients?

  3. What barriers do nurses face in implementing effective interventions in critical care settings?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce mortality rates among critically ill patients in Benue State hospitals.

  2. Specific interventions such as early detection, timely administration of medication, and continuous monitoring have a significant impact on reducing mortality in critically ill patients.

  3. Barriers such as inadequate training, staffing shortages, and lack of resources hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in critical care units.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on critically ill patients in ICUs in Benue State hospitals. Limitations may include small sample sizes and variations in the implementation of nurse-led interventions across hospitals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Nurse-Led Interventions: Medical and therapeutic interventions initiated and managed by nurses, including early detection of complications, monitoring vital signs, and administering prescribed treatments.

  • Critically Ill Patients: Patients suffering from severe and life-threatening conditions that require intensive care, such as organ failure, trauma, or respiratory failure.
